After the marathon game on Wednesday night that ended after midnight on Thursday morning, it almost stood to reason that one team or the other would show up at Progressive Field this afternoon and look as if they were still asleep.

Unfortunately that team was the Indians, as Gio Gonzalez and the Athletics avoided a sweep with a convincing 7-0 victory that never seemed to be in doubt once Oakland took the lead.

Gonzalez improved to 5-0 lifetime vs. the Indians with seven shutout innings, and ran his streak of scoreless innings against Cleveland to 27.2 frames. Gonzalez (12-11, 3.21 ERA) allowed only four hits and struck out seven as he cruised once the A’s grabbed a 2-0 lead off of Fausto Carmona (6-13, 4.84 ERA) in the Oakland fifth on a pair of two-out hits.

The Athletics added three more in the seventh when some sloppy defense undid the Tribe and forced Carmona from the game. Fausto was replaced by Nick Hagadone, making his Major League debut. Hagadone came on with the bases loaded and nobody out in the seventh and retired three straight hitters, with only one run scoring, on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hideki Matsui, but ran into trouble in the eighth and was replaced by another pitcher making his debut.

Corey Kluber fared better statistically than Hagadone, working an inning and a third and giving up no runs, although Kluber did allow two three inherited runners to score when he entered with the bases loaded as well, and gave up hits to the first two batters he faced. That closed the book on Hagadone, who ended up surrendering three runs in 1.2 frames of work.

Craig Breslow finished what Gonzalez had started with two scoreless innings of his own to cap a day in which the Tribe managed only five hits and drew four walks. The Indians went 0-for-4 with men in scoring position and left 10 men on base — just a forgettable performance which does not need to be dwelt on too much, except to say that Lou Marson had a good day, collecting two hits the day after catching 16 innings. Good job, Lou.

Fortunately for the Indians, the Tigers also lost this afternoon, as Detroit ended up splitting a four-game set at home vs. Kansas City. Now the Indians travel to Missouri to face the Royals this weekend, while the Tigers and the Chicago White Sox square off in Detroit.

The Tribe and White Sox are in a dead-heat in the American League Central, both trailing the Tigers by 5.5 games at 68-66.

Detroit’s magic number dropped to 22 even with their loss.

Woof. The Indians certainly looked like they played almost two games last night. Fausto Carmona gave the Tribe six innings, but an error by recently called-up Jerad Head hurt, as Carmona exited and Nick Hagadone was called on to clean up the mess.

Hagadone got out of a bases-loaded jam, giving up just one run in his first inning in the majors, but ran out of steam in his second inning, surrendering two hits and a walk. Corey Kluber, also in his first major league inning, was not able to keep the slate clean, allowing all three inherited runs to score before striking out Brandon Allen to stop the bleeding.

The Tribe then quickly went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth.

After playing a game last night that began in August and concluded in September, the Indians really need Fausto Carmona to come through on Thursday afternoon in a 12:05 game at Progressive Field that will wrap up this four-game series with the Oakland Athletics.

While neither Vinnie Pestano nor Rafael Perez appeared in last night’s game, and thus would be (hopefully) ready and fresh today, you don’t want either to have to pitch long-relief at this stage of the season — long relief being what Frank Herrmann did so brilliantly in last night’s 16-inning marathon win.

Carmona (6-12, 4.85 ERA) will try to give the Tribe a sweep against the Athletics and also equal the victory total from 2010, when the Indians went 69-93. With 68 wins at present, and 5.5 games behind the Tigers with less than 30 games to play, any and all wins are not only welcome, but vital.

Fausto has a nice template of success against Oakland in 2011, having gone eight innings and having allowed only one run in a 4-1 Cleveland win back on May 3. Carmona gave up five hits in that game to run his career record vs, Oakland to 4-5 in 10 starts.

Today’s opponent has owned the Indians in his career vs. Cleveland. Gio Gonzalez has started five times against The Good Guys and is 4-0 with a microscopic 0.89 ERA in 30.1 innings. This will be Gonzalez’s first outing of the year against the Tribe.

Overall Gonzalez is 11-11 with a 3.35 ERA and has won his last two starts to bounce back from a personal five-game losing streak.

Detroit is in action today at 1:05 vs. the Royals. The Chicago White Sox (who fell behind the Indians and into third place in the AL Central yesterday) have the day off.

The Indians had a chance to sweep Kansas City on Sunday and failed to seal the deal. Man, it would be nice to finish a sweep today and end the homestand on a 6-1 run.

Cleveland will be in Kansas City on Friday night to open a three-game set against the dangerous and pesky Royals.

Recap via SB Nation and Sports Network *

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) – Jack Hannahan hit the game-winning RBI single in the 16th inning after homering twice earlier in the night, lifting the Indians to a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Athletics on Wednesday.

"Huge night," Indians manager Manny Acta said of Hannahan.

And it ended on a huge play.

Cord Phelps was running the bases for Jim Thome and scored from second on Hannahan’s hit to right field.

It ended Cleveland’s third game of 14 innings or more in a 22-day span and gave the Indians three straight wins to start this four-game series.

Frank Herrmann (4-0) was among the heroes after throwing four perfect innings as the last available man in the Cleveland bullpen.

"He just gave us a huge lift," said Acta.

Thome drove a one-out single to the left field wall off Josh Outman (3-4) — it was hit too hard for the 41-year-old to reach second — and Carlos Santana followed with a base hit to move Phelps up.

Phelps then charged around third after Hannahan roped Outman’s 1-1 fastball through the right side, headed for a play at the plate.

David DeJesus’ throw beat the runner, but Kurt Suzuki had to leap for it. A replay showed the tag was applied on Phelps’ rear before he made contact with the plate, but home plate umpire Bruce Dreckman signaled safe.

"It’s one of those things where you can’t tell," Suzuki said. "He was safe and that’s what he called him."

Outman threw 1 1/3 innings to punctuate a strong effort by the Oakland bullpen in relief of starter Rich Harden, who gave up three runs in six innings.

Before Outman, six other pitchers — Craig Breslow, Grant Balfour, Fautino De Los Santos, Jerry Blevins, Neil Wagner and Andrew Bailey — combined to throw eight innings of one-hit ball.

Herrmann was the fifth Cleveland reliever after starter Ubaldo Jimenez gave up three runs in six innings.

The Indians took an early 1-0 lead on Kosuke Fukudome’s sacrifice fly in the first inning, but Jimenez surrendered a bases-loaded walk in the second to tie the game.

Hannahan led off the bottom of the inning with a first-pitch homer, but the A’s scored in each of the next two frames for a 3-2 lead. Brandon Allen had an RBI single in the third and Suzuki hit his 13th homer in the fourth.

In the sixth, Hannahan hit an 0-1 Harden split fastball high off the right- field pole to tie the game at 3-3.

Hannahan’s blast high off the right-field foul pole in the sixth made it a 3-3 game.

The A’s had men on first and second base with one out in the 10th, but Joe Smith got out of the jam with a strikeout and double play. They loaded the bases with one out in the 12th, but Chad Durbin struck out Ryan Sweeney and got DeJesus to pop out.

Cleveland stranded runners at second and third in the bottom of the 15th.

Jimenez struck out six of the final seven batters he faced…The Indians are 5-1 in the season series…Hannahan had his fourth career multi-homer game…The A’s placed pitcher Brian Fuentes on the bereavement list Wednesday and recalled fellow left-hander Blevins from Triple-A Sacramento…After the game, the A’s traded first baseman/outfielder Conor Jackson to the Boston Red Sox along with cash considerations for minor league right-handed pitcher Jason Rice.

The Indians will take the field on Wednesday night against Oakland already knowing that they need a win to keep pace with the Detroit Tigers, who rallied in the eighth inning this afternoon to defeat the Kansas City Royals 5-4. Cleveland, for the moment, trails the Tigers by six games in the American League Central.

The Tribe will be sending Ubaldo Jimenez to the hill for the third game of this four-game series, and Jimenez has been terrific in the Friendly Confines of Progressive Field since coming over from the Colorado Rockies. In two home starts with Cleveland, Ubaldo has compiled a 0.60 ERA in 15 innings of work, allowing only one run on 12 hits with 16 strikeouts over that span.

Jimenez will be making his first-ever appearance against the Athletics, who are scuffling to score runs and who seem to be a perfect opponent for Jimenez to stay hot at home.

Oakland, meanwhile, will send Rich Harden to the mound tonight. Harden has only appeared in 10 games for the A's in 2011, and is 4-2 with a 4.55 ERA in only 57.1 innings of work. It is looking more and more as if Harden -- for the second year in a row -- may not reach 100 frames, due to injuries.

Harden has started six times vs. The Good Guys in his career, but has only one decision. Harden stands 1-0 with a 4.36 ERA in 33 career innings against the Tribe, and will be making his first appearance of the season vs. Cleveland tonight.

This series will conclude with a 12:05 game on Thursday afternoon, when Fausto Carmona (6-12) will take on tough Oakland left-hander Gio Gonzalez. After that it will be a quick trip to Kansas City for the weekend before the Tribe comes back home on Monday to begin a critical series against the Tigers.

Finally the Indians gave their pitchers a break with some decent offense, and Jeanmar Gomez and the Tribe took advantage with a 6-2 victory that allows Cleveland to keep pace with the Tigers, who won in extra innings vs. the Royals.

Gomez was stellar in six innings, allowing only one unearned run on six hits to move to 1-2 while lowering his ERA to 4.55. Chad Durbin pitched a scoreless seventh; Rafael Perez took care of the eighth, but got into trouble in the ninth with a leadoff walk followed by a double to put two men in scoring position. Kurt Suzuki was retired on a loud sacrifice fly to cut the Tribe's lead to 6-2 that ended Perez's night.

Vinnie Pestano came on and restored order, striking out Ryan Sweeney for the second out and getting Jemile Weeks to ground out to end it.

As happened on Monday night, Kosuke Fukudome and Carlos Santana provided all of the early runs in the game, and Jack Hannahan got in on the fun in the sixth inning, when Cleveland broke the game open against Trevor Cahill (9-13) and Fautino De Los Santos.

In the Indians' third, with two outs, Fukudome delivered a two-run double for the first runs of the night. Last night it was Fukudome who put the Tribe up 1-0.

And in the sixth, Carlos Santana extended the lead to 4-1 with a two-run bomb. Last night, Santana hit a solo shot that proved to be the winning run in the Tribe's 2-1 win.

Hannahan added his two-run tater later in the sixth, and Cleveland was in a rare place as of late: comfortably ahead.

They would need that cushion as it turned out and as is chronicled above.

The White Sox, who lead the Indians by a half-game, have been playing a back-and-forth game tonight vs. Minnesota, and Chicago led 8-6 in the sixth at the time of writing.

This series will continue on Wednesday night when Ubaldo Jimenez takes on the Athletics' Rich Harden.

Jeanmar Gomez gets the call tonight for the Indians as they try to make it two wins in a row over the visiting Oakland Athletics.

Gomez, recalled from Columbus to make a start in the rotation-spot vacated by the disabled Josh Tomlin, will be making his sixth appearance of the year for the Tribe, but his first since July 17 and only his second since May 5. Gomez (0-2) lost in his last start when he went 5.1 innings and allowed five runs in an 8-3 loss to the Orioles in Baltimore.

Jeanmar faced the Athletics in Oakland on May 5, getting no decision in a game won by the Tribe 4-3. Gomez went 5.1 frames that day, allowing six hits but only one run in the only outing vs. Oakland in his career.

The Athletics will send Trevor Cahill (9-12, 4.13 ERA) against the Tribe tonight. Cahill was the winning pitcher in a 3-1 A’s win on May 4, a game in which Cahill surrendered only one run on five hits in seven innings, to run his career mark vs. Cleveland to 2-1 in 17.2 innings over three starts.

Cahill has had his problems away from the spacious Oakland Coliseum in 2011, going 4-5 away from home in 14 starts, and with a 5.24 ERA.

The Indians remained in third place in the AL Central after their victory last night when the second-place White Sox also won, but both teams gained a game on the division-leading Tigers, who lost at home to the Royals.

It wasn’t easy, but the Indians, behind David Huff and the bullpen and a couple of big extra-base hits, hung on to beat the Oakland Athletics 2-1 tonight at Progressive Field. In even better news, The Good Guys gained some ground in the American League Central.

Huff moved to 2-2 and completely erased any memory of his loss to the Tigers in his last start nine days ago, and man, this kind of effort from Huff — and from the guys in the pen — couldn’t have come at a better time.

Kosuke Fukudome kept the Athletics off the board in the second when he made a fine running catch with two outs and a man on second to retire the side, and Huff worked around a one-out double in the third. The Tribe’s bats, meanwhile, had been quieted to the tune of one hit through three innings.

In the first inning, Ezequiel Carrera walked leading off off of Brandon McCarthy (7-7) but was then caught stealing on a pitchout. Naturally, Fukudome immediately singled. When Asdrubal Cabrera and Jim Thome grounded out, the mini-threat was over for the Indians.

Carlos Santana delivered the first Cleveland hit since the opening inning to lead off the home fifth, but Shelley Duncan bounced into a double play and Lonnie Chisenhall was retired on a drive to dead center that was tracked down by Coco Crisp, and the game moved to the sixth, still scoreless.

Matsui doubled with two outs in the sixth for Oakland’s first hit since the third inning. The Tribe then intentionally walked Josh Willingham, and Huff got Brandon Allen to ground out to first-baseman Matt LaPorta to end the jam.

With two outs in the Tribe’s sixth, Carrera singled to left, and finally the Tribe broke through when Fukudome doubled down the right field line, with Carrera flying around the bases to just beat the throw to the plate, and the Indians led 1-0. Cabrera struck out to end the inning (McCarthy’s third of the frame and eighth of the game), but with a lead heading to the seventh and the Tigers losing in the fifth at home to Kansas City, things were looking up.

Huff was pulled after six innings and 99 pitches after giving up just three hits, with two walks and four Ks. Joe Smith came on to begin the seventh and plowed through a perfect inning with two strikeouts.

Santana gave the Indians a huge insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when he hit his 20th homer of the year with one out to make it 2-0 Good Guys.

Then things began getting dicey.

Smith allowed a leadoff double to Scott Sizemore in the eighth, and Tony Sipp came on for the Tribe. Sizemore then stole third. Jemile Weeks fell behind 0-2, battled and battled, and finally delivered an RBI double to cut the lead to 2-1, still with nobody out.

The Tribe caught a break when Crisp popped up on a sacrifice attempt. The ball fell and Santana threw Crisp out at first, and Weeks, not knowing if the ball would be caught in the air, had to hold at second.

Matsui then rocketed a drive to the wall in right, tracked down by Fukudome, and Weeks advanced to third on a ball which he would have scored on had Crisp got a good bunt down.

Vinnie Pestano came in with the tying run at third to face Oakland’s best hitter, Willingham, who had been intentionally walked earlier. This time the Tribe elected to pitch to Willingham, and Pestano came through with a called third strike, ending the inning and keeping the Cleveland lead at 2-1.

McCarthy worked a one-two-three eighth to give himself an eight-inning complete game. McCarthy allowed only two runs on five hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts in a very Justin Masterson-like outing.

Chris Perez came on to try to finish it off. Allen struck out leading off. Conor Jackson — mired in an 0-for-20 slump — then took a called third strike for the Indians’ ninth K of the night, leaving it up to Kurt Suzuki. Perez got Suzuki to pop out to end the game, earning his 30th save of the season and giving the Tribe a huge win.
