The Ohio State Buckeyes started to bring things back against the Penn State Nittany Lions, but ultimately fell short through a scoreless second half, and they were handed a 20-14 loss, their fifth loss of the season. Penn State jumped to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, and picked up ten more in the second. Ohio State was able to outscore them in the second, putting up two touchdowns, but that was where it ended. Ohio State squandered multiple opportunities, with two big fumbles in the third quarter

Ohio State had a very solid opportunity to make a comeback in the fourth quarter, set up with a 4th and 5 at the Penn State 36 yard-line, but J.B. Shugarts was called for a false start and they moved back to 4th and 10. Braxton Miller dropped back, and ended up scrambling, looking for the ten yards, but was only able to get nine. Penn State would go on to kill most of the clock, and Ohio State finished the game trying to pass from a 4th and 17 back at their own 28-yard line. It went incomplete, and they were handed the loss.

It was definitely a close game, with both teams putting up similar offense stats. Miller threw for just 83 yards with a touchdown, while Penn State's Matthew McGloin had just 88 yards with no touchdowns, and an interception. Penn State was able to put up 239 total yards rushing against Ohio States 206. Ohio State also out-gained them in kick return yardage. Without the two lost fumbles, they might have been able to win the game.

The Buckeyes will next take on the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday, Nov. 26.

The Ohio State Buckeyes entered the third quarter trailing the Penn State Nittany Lions, and that's how they'll enter the final quarter as well. Both teams began with a pair of punts, and then Ohio State got set to drive at 8:52. But Dan Herron was stopped for a loss of five yards, and Penn State's Jordan Hill recovered a fumble, giving them the ball at the OSU 11 yard-line. Penn State picked up some yardage, reached 2nd down twice, got a holding penalty in their favor, and then ended up with a 2nd and goal at the OSU one yard-line.

Michael Zordich was stuffed three times in a row and Penn State decided to go for it at 4th and goal at the one yard-line. Silas Reed was stuffed and Ohio state got a turnover on downs. Ohio State got out of their own endzone, getting to the 35-yard line, but they cough up the ball again, as Carlos Hyde fumbles at the end of an 11-yard rush. Penn State took over, punted, and Ohio State had the ball at the end of the quarter.

The Buckeyes trail 20-14 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Ohio State Buckeyes started very slow against Penn State early on, but started to balance out as the game went on. Penn State jumped to an early 10-0 lead in the first quarter, when Stephon Green rushed for a 39-yard touchdown on the Nittany Lions' first drive. Later in the quarter, Anthony Fera would add a 43-yard field goal.

Ohio State did come back though, Braxton Miller ran for a 24-yard touchdown to start the second quarter, but Penn State responded quickly with another Green touchdown. The touchdown was made possible by a Silas Redd 42-yard run that took the ball to the Ohio State 36-yard line. After a couple punts, Ohio State came back with another Braxton Miller touchdown drive, this one a seven-yard pass to Jake Stoneburner. Miller had a 24-yard run on the drive.

With five minutes to go in the first half, Penn State set up a nine-play drive that ende in a 46-yard field goal, to give them a 20-14 lead as time expired in the first half.

Ohio State and Penn State hope to put their off the field distractions aside and decide the Big Ten Leaders Division when they meet in Columbus on Saturday. Both teams still have a chance to play in the Big Ten title game in Indianapolis, but Penn State is in a better position.
Penn State takes on Ohio State in a must-win game for both teams.

There has been a dark cloud hanging over both Penn State and Ohio State's football programs this season, both on and off the field. Ohio State lost their legendary head coach as well as Heisman candidate at quarterback, and Penn State lost a sports icon as well as a father figure.

All that doesn't change the fact that these two teams have a game to play on Saturday on ESPN, and it's essentially a must-win game for both teams.

Ohio State absolutely has to win this game in order to keep their Big Ten title hopes alive, whatever hopes they have left anyway, and Penn State has to put their off-field scandal as well as recent loss to Nebraska aside so they can take care of business on the road and win a game they will be favored to win on the road.

I think the Buckeyes have a good shot at this game, but they are going to need a huge effort out of their running game. Quarterback Braxton Miller has gotten a lot of help from senior tailback Dan Herron lately, and the two have been a pretty deadly rushing duo.

Herron's game was way off in a loss against Purdue, and Miller essentially had to carry the team.

One area where Ohio State really needs to take advantage is rushing the passer. Penn State quarterbacks Matt McGloin and Robert Bolden are nothing to write home about, but they are capable of making plays in the passing game. Ohio State needs to confuse the quarterbacks and force them into making bad throws.

Nittany Lions running back Silas Redd is one of the best backs in the Big Ten, so the Buckeyes are going to have to place their focus on containing him and trying to force Penn State to beat them through the air.

As we mentioned before, the Buckeyes are getting a big boost in the passing game with the return of suspended wide receiver DeVier Posey, who is going to have to shake off the rust really quickly because he's going up against a pretty good cornerback in D'Anton Lynn, and the Buckeyes are not going to have a lot of time to throw with Devon Still making plays in the backfield.

The key for Ohio State's offense is going to be getting the ball outside, not allowing Penn State's interior dominance to control the game. They are a quick defense overall, but Ohio State has really fast skill position players as well as a great athlete at quarterback. Making plays on the outside will be absolutely key.

I think Ohio State will protect their home field really well, so I like them to win this game, but I think it will be ground-and-pound all afternoon, and I think it will be close all the way through.

With all that has happened off the field of late for the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes it seems odd to talk about just a football game between them. As game time approaches, the distractions appear to be factoring into the the game's final line. According to SB Nation's Odd partner Oddshark, the Buckeyes come in as a seven point favorite at home:

Backers of the Buckeyes have seen them go 6-4 and 5-5 ATS so far this season, while the Nittany Lions are at 8-2 and 2-7-1 ATS. In totals betting, the Nittany Lions are 1-7-1, while the Buckeyes are 5-5.

That line could be considered a surprise since the Buckeyes are coming off of an overtime loss to Purdue. The Nittany Lions defeated the Boilermakers by five a few weeks ago in Happy Valley, but that was before the massive distraction of the Jerry Sandusky case broke. SB Nation's Black Shoe Diaries has a solid statistical breakdown of this game:

This game could get weird. Both defenses look like they could dominate the opposing offense. This could mean a bunch of offensive (literally) screw ups that allow the other team to capitalize. Things like short fields, red zone scoring, and (gulp) defensive touchdowns could be a staple of a game like this one.

The return of Devier Posey for the Buckeyes could be a game-changer, as he adds an element that has been missing for the Ohio State offense.

Ohio State getting a boost in the passing game from WR DeVier Posey.

If you had told me a year ago that Ohio State vs. Penn State be coached by someone other than Jim Tressel and Joe Paterno, I probably would have laughed in your face.

Now, that's just something that we all have to get used to as the Buckeyes prepare to take on the Nittany Lions following a very disappointing overtime loss to the Purdue Boilermakers.

On the bright side for Ohio State, they will get a boost from wide receiver DeVier Posey who has been suspended all season up to this point. Posey is a big wide receiver who has 15 touchdowns over the last two seasons, and is undoubtedly one of the more dynamic playmakers on the Ohio State roster.

When the Buckeyes started their big three game winning streak against Illinois, they got a huge boost from the return of suspended running back Dan Herron. Herron was not impressive in the team's loss to Purdue, averaging less than four yards per carry and not reaching the 100 yard mark for the first time this season.

This is a game where the Buckeyes are going to need those two seniors to really step up their game. Quarterback Braxton Miller is really improving as a player, and that was evident on the stat sheet against Purdue where he threw two touchdowns and ran for another, but accuracy is still an issue.

Miller had to attempt a season high 18 passes against Purdue, and that is something the Buckeyes would like to veer away from. Now, they may be able to open up the vertical passing game a little bit more with Posey in the fold, because he can stretch the field and make plays after the catch.

This is a huge game for both teams because a loss basically takes the Buckeyes out of the Big Ten championship race, and a win for Penn State would mean they are guaranteed a share of the Leaders' division title.

One thing that Ohio State is looking to make sure of is that the fans don't heckle the innocent players who are traveling to their stadium to play a football game, and Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith gave this message to the fans:

"We’re asking all of our Buckeye fans who’ll be here this weekend to continue to show the sportsmanship and class they represent as we welcome our visitors from Penn State," Smith said.

This is Penn State's first road game since Joe Paterno left, and their defense needs to be prepared for the rushing attack of Ohio State. The Buckeyes have so many weapons in terms of the running game that they can outlast Penn State if they continue to pound the ball, so the big men in the middle for Penn State need to really force the Buckeyes to throw early and often.

Enter Posey, who is making his season debut. If Penn State defensive tackle Devon Still and his crew up front can force the Buckeyes into passing the ball, it could get interesting and fast. Posey will be going up against a very good cornerback in D'Anton Lynn who is one of the best in the Big Ten in his first game, not exactly the same as if he were to debut in a normal season-opener like Ohio or something like that.

I expect Posey will be rusty, but in this offense, really anything goes. If Posey can break free up the seam on a double move, it could prove to be the difference in this big matchup.

At 3-3 Ohio State needs to win its remaining two games against Penn State and Michigan, then hope that Wisconsin loses to Illinois this week while beating Penn State next week. In that exact scenario the Buckeyes would go to Indianapolis as the Leaders' Division representative.

In that scenario Ohio State would be involved in a three- or four-way tie with Wisconsin, Penn State, and possibly Purdue, but a 2-1 record against those three teams (and Purdue's 1-2 record) would give them a major advantage. First, the Buckeyes must take care of business against Penn State on Senior Day in Columbus.

Much of the focus has been off the field for both teams this season. Ohio State has had its share of run-ins with the NCAA, but those pale in comparison with the allegations that Penn State has had to face in the Jerry Sandusky scandal. The Nittany Lions were 5-0 and fully in control of the Leaders Division before the scandal broke, but last week's loss to Nebraska opened up the race for everyone else.
