Add another disappointing chapter to the unfulfilled career of Cleveland Indians outfielder Grady Sizemore. The team announced on Tuesday that Sizemore, who has yet to play a game in 2012, will indeed miss the remainder of the 2012 season after not progressing in rehab like the team hoped he would. Sizemore underwent knee surgery in late 2011 and back surgery in spring of 2012, and has not been able to get back to 100%.

Sizemore returned to the Indians in 2012 on an incentive-laden contract that tied much of his salary to his health, and it's fair to wonder if any team will take a chance on him for the 2013 season. Sizemore has only played in 104 games since the beginning of the 2011 season.

The Cleveland Indians appear less optimistic regarding outfielder Grady Sizemore's return this season, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney.

This is a slight change in tone, with all prior reports indicating that the veteran centerfielder would return at some point this season. Now, that appears to be up in the air.

Sizemore has been on the 60-day Disabled List since Spring Training, but he's made only gradual progress in rehab as the outfielder's injury bug over the past several seasons continues to bite. He played a full 162 games for Cleveland in 2006 and 2007 and 157 games in 2008 and made the American League All-Star team all three seasons, but he's played only 210 games in the past three-plus seasons.

The Indians signed the outfielder to an incentive-laden one-year deal this offseason in the hopes that he could return healthier and provide even a shell of his former self, but Sizemore has yet to see the field this season.

On Sunday, the Cleveland Indians oft-injured outfielder Grady Sizemore made some progress when he took batting practice and went for a run on a tread mill during a rehab session stemming from a back injury. This comes as a positive development after having to slow down his rehab earlier in June.

However, despite the gradual process, Sizemore is no closer to making his season debut but the Indians are hopeful that he will be able to contribute in some capacity this season.

Sizemore has been battling injuries since before the season started as he underwent back surgery back in Feb. and started the season on the 60-day disabled list.

The Cleveland Indians took a big risk when they re-signed Grady Sizemore prior to the beginning of the season, and it came back to bite them when they were forced to place him on the 60-day disabled list. Many hoped that Sizemore would be able to return at the end of that period, and there was even some good signs in his rehab at the beginning of May.

Sizemore has been doing some throwing and running before games here and there, but now it looks like he might be injured for longer than previously thought. According to Jordan Bastian on Twitter, trainers have been saying that Sizemore has slowed down in his rehab and that he has backed off of running activities in the last couple weeks.

This is par the course for Sizemore, who has had five different surgeries over the last three years. Still, one of the trainers does believe that Sizemore has more to offer the team, even in 2012:

Sizemore was placed on the 60-day disabled list at the start of the season after he missed all of spring training recovering from back surgery. The earliest he could return to the team is June 3rd, assuming he suffers no setbacks in his rehab.

Indians manager Manny Acta told the Akron Beacon Journal that he expects Sizemore to be taking batting practice by next week.

Seeing him throw long toss and get active in running a month before his potential return can only be good signs for Indians fans that want to see Sizemore back in action.

The Cleveland Indians have to trim their 40-man roster by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, to make room for Dan Wheeler and Jose Lopez who made the team as minor league invitees. With two players needing to be taken off the roster, the first move came this afternoon when the Tribe announced that perpetually injured center fielder Grady Sizemore would be put on the 60-day disabled list. Sizemore missed all of spring training after back surgery in February.

When news first came down about the back injury, it was expected that he would miss four to eight weeks. Well, now we have official confirmation that he will miss at least the first two months of the season. The earliest he could return is June 3rd, and that's if he doesn't experience any setbacks in his rehab.

The Indians still have to designate one more player for assignment to finalize the roster this evening.

The procedure Sizemore underwent was a microdiscectomy, a surgery to remove herniated disc material that is pressing on a nerve root or the spinal cord. Sizemore has been plagued with knee injuries over the past two seasons, including a microfracture surgery on his left knee in 2010.

After Cleveland declines Sizemore's option for the 2012 season, they resigned him to a one-year worth about $5 million. Sizemore, 29, has played his entire career with the Cleveland Indians after being drafted by the Montreal Expos in 2000.

For more on the Cleveland Indians, check out Let's Go Tribe.

When the Cleveland Indians signed Grady Sizmore to a one-year deal back in November, the biggest question mark was his health. He was the model of durability for the Tribe between 2005 and 2008, but his last three seasons have been marred by injury in a big way. He played in 106 games in 2009, but followed that up with just 33 in 2010 and 71 games in 2011. Those were predominantly knee injuries, but it looks like something else may force him to miss time in 2012.

Payl Hoynes of The Plain Dealer had a couple tweets on Friday, reporting that Sizemore is set to miss some time, starting with, of course, opening day:

<s>#</s>Indians CF Grady Sizemore (back) out for opening day.

Opening day is set for April 5, so the injury is definitely significant, even if the Indians are just being safe. Hoynes followed up with a tweet that Sizemore strained his lower back fielding grounders in the outfield two weeks ago. There's currently no timetable for his return, but it would be the second time in as many seasons that he's been on the disabled list to start a season, if the Indians place him on it, that is.

The Indians signed Sizemore knowing full-well that he'd undergone five operations over the last three years, including microfracture surgery in his left knee in 2010 and arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in 2011. His contract is pretty friendly for the team though, with incentives and things of that nature. Still, it's certainly not good news.
