Though the Cleveland Browns are set to move forward with Colt McCoy as the starting quarterback, that doesn't mean they haven't already tried to replace him. Multiple reports suggested that the Browns tried their best to move into the No. 2 spot in the 2012 NFL Draft so they could select quarterback Robert Griffin III out of Baylor, but that wasn't the only thing the team did.

According to Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland 850 AM WKNR, the Browns also contacted the St. Louis Rams about quarterback Sam Bradford and his potential availability. Rams head coach Jeff Fisher did confirm that some teams inquired about Bradford, but that the Rams hadn't considered trading him at all.

There's plenty of reason for the Browns to be interested in Bradford, especially at the time. According to the timeline, that was before the Washington Redskins traded into the No. 2 spot to put themselves in line to take Griffin, and when there was a little buzz around the possibility of the Rams selecting Griffin to upgrade their quarterback position, thus making Bradford expendable.

On top of that, there's the history between Browns head coach Pat Shurmur and Bradford. Shurmur was the Rams' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach when Bradford was drafted, and the two shared a great season together before Shurmur departed for the Browns. Since then, Bradford's stock has dropped considerably, though obviously not in the eyes of his former position coach.

Browns head coach Pat Shurmur addressed the media at the owners' meetings, and he indicated the Browns plan to move forward with Colt McCoy as their quarterback.

The Cleveland Browns are "moving forward" with Colt McCoy as their quarterback, according to head coach Pat Shurmur. The coach spoke with the media Tuesday morning at the NFL's owner meetings in Palm Beach, and it appears there will be no open competition between McCoy and last year's backup, Seneca Wallace. While he may be moving forward, his quotes weren't exactly a ringing endorsement:

"At this point, he's our quarterback,'' said Shurmur. "We're looking forward to him being our guy and I'm looking forward to seeing him improve. We believe he has a chance to be a fine player in this league.''

Shumur also indicated that he's looking forward to working with McCoy over a full offseason, and establishing greater chemistry with healthier receivers. But it's still an equivocation and he did not completely rule out the Browns drafting a quarterback in next month's draft.
