New head coach Terry Bowden has wrapped his first Spring with the Akron Zips. On Saturday, he got the chance to show off his team in front of fans at the annual Spring Game held inside InfoCision Stadium. The teams were comprised of the first team defense and the second team offense for the White squad, and the second defense and the first team offense for the Blue squad.

The first team defense gave up just 14 points to the first team offense on the day. Clayton Moore was given the first snaps under center, but struggled off the bat. On his first possession he was sacked, then ran a delayed handoff to the running back who was promptly taken down in the endzone for a safety. He looked more accurate with a running clock in the second half, however, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.

Redshirt freshman Kyle Pohl may have the liveliest arm of any of the signal callers vying for a starting spot this season, but may still need seasoning. Dalton Williams apparently looked very accurate throwing to short and intermediate routes, but may not have the arm to keep safeties from pulling in tight to the line.

Bowden summed up the day for his quarterbacks after the game:

"Every one of them did something good," Bowden said. "[Moore] has a fiery nature. [Williams] shows you that he understands the offense. He gets rid of the ball so quick that you don't get sacks. [Pohl] showed you his potential, although he had a slow start today. If one of them would have clearly outdone the other ones, it would have made things easier on me. We'll pick a quarterback. We just won't pick one now."

Terry Bowden doing his best to energize Akron football program.

The University of Akron football program takes another step in their new era when coach Terry Bowden wraps up spring practice for the Zips with their annual spring game at InfoCision Stadium.

After a 1-11 season with no wins in the Mid-American Conference, Bowden's Zips are looking to do more than improve on those results. Wins are not a concern in spring practice for Bowden, as he has been looking to improve the team's running game and find some playmakers that can make winning plays.

"I'd like to think I know how to coach, but it's hard to coach a 12-play drive," he said. "Give me a running back who can score on a 60-yard touchdown run and I'm a smarter coach."

He's looking for blocking, tackling, catching and running - all obvious elements of football, but sorely lacking in recent years.

"I told the guys to go out and have a great time Saturday. The coaches won't be on the field. Just let us go out and play football and see who the playmakers are," he said.

Bowden will be looking for returning running backs Jawon Chisholm and Broderick Alexander to provide some of that play-making ability while quarterback Clayton Moore is among several candidates vying for the open job.

The spring game is scheduled to kickoff at 3:00 p.m. with free admission which will include a post-game autograph session.
