Kansas City shortstop Alcides Escobar singled off Cleveland closer Chris Perez to score Eric Hosmer in the bottom of the eleventh inning lifting the Royals over the Indians, 7-6. The win completed a series sweep for Kansas City and left the Indians with their sixth-straight loss.

Right-handed rookie Corey Kluber made his first major league start after being called up to replace Derek Lowe on Cleveland's pitching staff. Things started out rocky for Kluber to say the least as the Royals greeted him in the first inning with two home runs, a triple and three singles to score six runs in the bottom of the first.

Kluber gave up a home run to the first batter he faced, Alex Gordon and then Hosmer added a three-run blast later in the inning, appearing to bury Kluber and the Indians to start the game. Kluber was able to recover from the initial onslaught, though and hold the Royals scoreless for the next three innings before Tony Sipp relieved him with one out in the fifth inning.

The Tribe bullpen kept the Royals' offense in check, allowing the Cleveland offense to eventually rally and send the game to extra innings. Carlos Santana led the way with a two-run single as part of a three-run third inning which chased Kansas City starter Bruce Chen from the game. Santana also smacked a two-run homer in the fifth inning to tie the game at 6-6.

The Tribe remain on the road when they open up a weekend series against the Detroit Tigers on Friday.

The Indians look to avoid the three-game sweep against the Royals on Thursday when Corey Kluber makes his first big league start with Derek Lowe being designated for assignment.

Kluber went 11-7 with a 3.59 ERA in 21 starts striking out 128 over 125 1-3 innings for Triple-A Columbus this year. Last season, he compiled an 8.31 ERA in three relief appearances. Kluber will face Bruce Chen (7-9, 5.49 ERA) in the pitching duel.

The Indians are seven games behind the AL Central leading Chicago White Sox heading into Thursday's action. Take a look at the schedule and broadcast information here.

The Cleveland Indians have designated pitcher Derek Lowe for assignment.

The Cleveland Indians designated Derek Lowe for assignment late Wednesday night.

The move was first reported by MLB.com's Jordan Bastian in a very brief tweet:

Lowe designated for assignment. More on mlb.com soon.

— Jordan Bastian (@MLBastian) August 2, 2012

The move is not shocking, as Lowe has been less than effective this season for Cleveland. The 39-year-old has lost his last four starts. He also has a 5.52 ERA on the year, with 45 walks to 41 strikeouts in 119 innings pitched.

This comes on the heels of the Indians changing their rotation around by moving Josh Tomlin to the bullpen. The recently called up Cory Kluber will make his first major league start on Thursday against the Kansas City Royals.

The bottom continues to fall out on the second half of Cleveland's season as we enter August, as the Indians will be looking to avoid dropping their fifth consecutive game on Wednesday evening in game two against Kansas City.

Currently winless after four attempts during their nine-game roadtrip, the Indians somehow remain only six games out of the division lead after this latest freefall. Impressive youngster Zach McAllister, who has fanned at least five batters in six straight outings, will get the ball for Indians manager Manny Acta in game two, while Luis Mendoza will make his 14th start of 2012 for the Royals.

Despite not being dealt at the deadline as previously reported, Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo has struggled to keep up his impressive pace as of late during Cleveland's skid. After hitting the .297 mark on July 27, Choo has been mired in a 1-for-14 slump from the plate that has brought his average back down to .288. Now that the rumors about his possible departure have dissipated, the Indians clearly need Choo to get back on track in the coming weeks.

Pitching inconsistency has plagued the Cleveland Indians all season even as they've pushed their way up near the top of the AL Central. They made another move to try and swap around the pitching rotation on Tuesday when they brought starter Josh Tomlin in as a reliever to replace the ineffective Derek Lowe. Jordan Bastian on twitter later reported that Tomlin to the bullpen was going to be an official move. They also have a replacement coming up:

Josh Tomlin has been moved to the bullpen. RHP Corey Kluber will be up from AAA Columbus to take Tomlin's turn in rotation Thurs.

— Jordan Bastian (@MLBastian) August 1, 2012

Tomlin has been brutal lately in the starting rotation, though the unproven Kluber might not provide much of an upgrade. The 25 year old has made three big league appearances, all last season, and sported an 8.31 ERA through them with no record.
