Angels: Manny Acta Upset Zach Grienke Not Ejected Tuesday Night

Ubaldo Jimenez was wild yet again on Tuesday night, hitting Angles second baseman Howie Kendrick in the second inning on his way to allowing eight runs in four innings. Jimenez has been the wildest pitcher in the MLB this season, so it should be expected he'd get a bit too inside at least once per game.

Which is possibly why manager Manny Acta was so upset with what he felt was unnecessary retaliation by the Angels, when starter Zach Grienke hit Carlos Santana on the hip in the fourth inning. Intentional or not, Grienke was given merely a warning, precluding the Indians from even thinking about about retaliating in turn.

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

"I understand that the umpires are just trying to cover themselves, but that's just not right," said Acta. "The rule says that if you know, and you're sure that a guy hit a guy on purpose, you can throw him out of the game. He knew he hit him on purpose.

"If the umpire considered that he hit him on the purpose, what's the ruling? So now he puts a warning so we can't retaliate? That's not fair."

It was a frustrating night for Acta and Indians, with Jimenez lasting just four innings and Cleveleand eventually losing 9-6 to the Angels. The Angels stated that Grienke's pitch was far from retaliation and was merely an instance of an inside pitch getting away from the star pitcher.

The Indians face the Angels again tonight at 10:05 p.m. ET.

The Cleveland Indians will welcome pitcher Roberto Hernandez back to the mound on Wednesday evening against the Angels, as the veteran starter aims to help his team wrap up its series with Los Angeles on a high note.

Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona, is making his first appearance of 2012 after serving a league-imposed suspension. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Dominican Republic native sports a 4.59 career earned-run average with 53 victories as a major leaguer, but finished just 7-15 overall during a dismal 2011 campaign before his true identity was revealed.

Hernandez will have to be sharp out of the gate against a stacked Los Angeles lineup of power hitters, as 21-year-old phenom Mike Trout will hope to continue his complete assault of American League pitchers. Now hitting an AL-best .341 on the season, Trout has amassed 21 home runs and 37 stolen bases over just 94 games this year for the Angels, and may just be the best player in baseball at the moment.

Here are Wednesday's starting lineups for both teams:

The Indians finally snapped their road losing steak on Monday night and were looking to back that up with a win on Tuesday as Ubaldo Jimenez took the hill. Unfortunately for Manny Acta, things did not go well. Jimenez, in yet another display of his maddening inconsistency and underwhelming production, was rocked by the Angels, giving up eight runs in just four innings of work. Jimenez was coming off one of his better starts of the year, when he looked strong against the Red Sox.

It was apparent early that he was not ready to go, as the Angels pounded four runs across in the first inning. Anaheim batted around in the inning, stringing together five hits in a parade of singles. Jimenez added to the destruction with his own wildness, walking Albert Pujols and hitting Howie Kendrick with a pitch.

The Angels would completely blow things open in the fourth, with two homers making it 8-0. Erick Aybar led things off with a solo shot that went 400 feet, well over the wall in right. After a Mike Trout single and a walk to Chris Iannetta, Albert Pujols stepped into the box and took a Ubaldo offering to left for his 26th homer of the season. Pujols simply flicked his bat at the pitch and deposited it into the first row of seats in left.

The Indians would make some noise on offense in the late innings, but the eight-run deficit was way too much to overcome. Michael Brantley and Casey Kotchman each slammed two-run homers, but that wasn't nearly enough. As a result, Zack Greinke notched his first win in an Angels uniform.

The Indians can still take the series on Wednesday evening. It will mark the return of the Roberto Hernandez, or Fausto Carmona, as many used to know him.

Manny Acta's Indians will aim to keep the good vibes going on their AL West road trip on Tuesday night from Los Angeles, as Cleveland plans to send righty Ubaldo Jimenez to the hill in game two of the series.

Indians hitters clipped Los Angeles starter C.J. Wilson for three runs (two earned) early on in Monday's opener, and then proceeded to rack up three more tallies against a shaky Angels bullpen in a 6-2 victory.

Slotted at the designated hitter position for game two will be second baseman Jason Kipnis, who will yield a night in the field at second base to reserve Jason Donald. Donald is hitting a meager .209 on the year with just one home run, but has recorded a hit in four of his last five appearances.

After undergoing an MRI on his throwing elbow to open the week, the Cleveland Indians officially placed struggling starter Josh Tomlin on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday afternoon:

The <s>#</s>Indians have placed RHP Josh Tomlin on 15-day DL w/ right elbow inflammation; RHP Roberto Hernandez reinstated to start Wed. vs. LAA

The 27-year-old Tomlin is 5-8 with a woeful 6.36 earned-run average in 21 games this season, and just hasn't quite looked comfortable as of late on the mound for the Indians. Banished from the starting rotation in late July due to erratic play, Tomlin served up 10 earned runs on nine hits over just 5.2 innings in the month of August before being shut down, so a stint on the disabled list may be a blessing in disguise.

Roberto Hernandez, who some may remember as the man once known as Fausto Carmona, was reinstated from his league suspension to fill Tomlin's roster spot. Hernandez is making his first start of 2012 after going 7-15 for the Indians last season, and could be a serious short-term boost if he's able to revert to his '07 form.

The Cleveland Indians snapped their 10-game road losing streak with a 6-2 win against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night. Justin Masterson took a shutout into the seventh inning, and finished with a final stat line of 6 IP, 6 H, 3 BB, and 4 K.

Now they'll look to make it two in a row as Ubaldo Jimenez takes the mound. Jimenez is coming off one of his best starts this season. He struck out a season-high 10 against the Red Sox on Thursday, allowing three runs on six innings of work.

The Indians, whose playoff hopes are all but extinct, are hoping to push the sliding Angels further out of the wild-card race.

On the other side, the Angels will look to avoid losing their fourth in a row, as they send Zack Greinke to the hill. Greinke is still searching for his first win as an Angel. He's especially struggled in his last two outings, allowing a combined 10 earned runs.

While Kipnis continues to nurse a stiff neck, Jason Donald will start at second base and lead off for the Tribe.

In 70 plate apperances, Donald has posted an OPS of just .486, a stark contrast to the .721 OPS that Kipnis has put up. Donald isn't exactly your prototypical leadoff hitter either; he doesn't walk much, owns a .315 career on-base percentage and isn't a huge threat on the basepaths. However, Manny Acta is low on options at this point, and Donald does have a hit in three of the four games in which he's played since Kipnis went down.
