<p>Defending champion Novak Djokovic, soon-to-be retiring Andy Roddick and women's No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova are among the notables in action Sunday during the 2012 U.S. Open.</p>
<p>Djokovic, the No. 2 seed in this year's tournament, faces Julien Benneteau at 11 a.m. at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Their match will be followed at approximately 1:30 p.m. by Andy Roddick, <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/tennis/2012/8/31/3282272/andy-roddick-retires-tennis-hall-of-fame-us-open-2012" target="_blank">who announced that he'd retire</a> at the end of the 2012 U.S. Open, against Fabio Fognini. Those are both third round matchups. Sharapova faces Nadia Petrova at 7 p.m. in a fourth round matchup.</p>
<p>Both the <a href="http://www.sbnation.com/tennis/2012/9/2/3286389/us-open-tennis-2012-results-roger-federer-win-serena-williams-championships" target="_blank">men's and women's top seeds advanced yesterday</a>. Roger Federer beat Fernando Verdasco, setting up a fourth round matchup between Federer and Mardy Fish. Serena Williams beat Ekaterina Makarova to advance.</p>
<p>TV coverage of today's matches is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on CBS and from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on The Tennis Channel.</p>

Television coverage begins on Tennis Channel at 10:30 a.m. ET, switching to ESPN2 at 1:00 p.m.</p>
<p>In the day's main event in the men's draw, top seed Roger Federer returns to action at 7:00 p.m. ET against the German Bjorn Phau. Federer quickly finished Donald Young in his opening match in straight sets, and is heavily favored over the unranked Phau.</p>
<p>Elsewhere, fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga faces Martin Klizan at approximately 1:00 Thursday afternoon. Tsonga was a quarterfinalist last year, but lost to Federer. He made the semifinals at Wimbledon this year, though, and is playing some of his finest tennis. Other players of note in action Thursday include No. 11 Nicolas Almagro (11:00 a.m.), No. 12 Marin CIlic (approx. 1:00 p.m.), No. 23 Mardy Fish (1:00) and unranked American James Blake facing No. 24 Marcel Granollers (5:00).</p>
<p>On the women's side, fourth-seeded Serena Williams faces Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in a second-round match at approximately 3:00 p.m. ET. The three-time champion easily took care of Coco Vandeweghe in her first-round match.</p>
<p>Serena's sister, Venus, will play an extremely difficult second-round match against No. 6 Angelique Kerber. Venus Williams had little trouble in her first-round match, but will be facing 2011 semifinalist Kerber in a match immediately following Federer-Phau. Second-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska will be playing Carla Suarez Navarro in an early-afternoon match.</p>

<p>Victoria Azarenka, the top seed in the women's bracket, easily advanced to the third round of the 2012 U.S. Open Wednesday, defeating Kiresten Flipkens, 6-2, 6-2, in the second round in Flushing Meadows, NY. Azarenka will play China's Jie Zheng, who also won, 6-3, 6-1 over Magdalena Rybarikova, in the third round.</p>
<p>Currently, Azarenka and Zheng are one of four women to collect second-round victories on Day 3 of the single-elimination tournament. The other women competitors to advance are: Mallory Burdette, who beat Lucie Hradecka, 6-2, 6-4, and Nadia Petrova, who earned a straight-set victory (6-3, 6-1) over fellow Russian Simona Halep.</p>
<p>Later in the day, around 5 p.m. ET, Kim Clijsters will take on Laura Robson at Arther Ashe Stadium. At 7 p.m. ET, Maria Sharapova will face off against Lourdes Dominguez Lino.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, on the men's side: Igor Sijsling defeated Daniel Gimeno-Traver, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4, in a first-round contest, while tonight's primetime match-up is between Andy Murray and Ivan Dodig.</p>

<p>2012 U.S. Open action continues on Wednesday as the men wrap up the first round and the women open up the second round. On the men's side, a few of the top seeds will be in action. Ninth seeded American John Isner will take on Xavier Malisse while fourth seeded Kevin Ferrer will battle unseeded Kevin Anderson. Andy Murray, Juan Martin del Potro and Janko Tipsarevic will also take the court in New York.</p>
<p>On the women's side, top seeded Victoria Azarenka will take on Kirsten Flipkens in Arthur Ashe Stadium. She'll be followed on that court later in the day by third seeded Maria Sharapova, who is matched up against Lourdes Dominguez Lino. Defending U.S. Open champ Samantha Stosur will face Edina Gallovis, while No. 23 seeded Kim Clijsters will take on Laura Robson.</p>

<p>The first round of the U.S. Open continued from New York on Tuesday with some big names in action both early and late.</p>
<p>Novak Djokovic made easy work of first-round opponent Paolo Lorenzi. Djokovic, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, only lost two games in the match this evening, winning 6-1, 6-0, 6-1.</p>
<p>On the women's side, eighth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki was eliminated tonight in straight-sets by Irina-Camelia Begu, dropping both sets 6-2.</p>
<p>No. 4-seed Serena Williams has begin her U.S. Open tonight, taking on Coco Vandeweghe in a match that just started inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium.</p>
<p>Earlier in the day, American Andy Roddick won his first-round match in straight-sets over fellow American Rhyne Williams by scores of 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga opened his tournament with a 6-3, 6-1, 7-6(3) win over Karol Beck.</p>
<p>Early women's action included second-seeded woman Agnieszka Radwanska taking care of her first match easily, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Nina Bratchikova. Venus Williams also made short work of fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, beating her 6-3, 6-1.</p>
<p>Cincinnati native Nicole Gibbs was eliminated on Monday by Alize Cornet, 7-5, 6-3.</p>

<p>Maria Sharapova had little trouble in her first-round match, advancing with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Melinda Czink at the U.S. Open on Monday.</p>
<p>The third-ranked Sharapova had 24 winners to Czink's eight, along with five aces to Czink's one.</p>
<p>Elsewhere, No. 5 seed Petra Kvitova had a little more trouble, but earned a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win over Polona Hercog in her first-round match. The edge in winners was just 22-16 in favor of Kvitova, who also had one more unforced error than Hercog.</p>
<p>As for local ties, Cincinnati native Nicole Gibbs trails Alize Cornet 5-7, 3-3 in their first-round match.</p>
<p>On the men's side, third-ranked Andy Murray scored a 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 victory over American Alex Bogomolov Jr. Murray had a 46-24 edge in winners and 7-1 edge in aces.</p>
