The Cleveland Indians will have to settle for only taking two of three games vs. the Detroit Tigers after falling in Detroit 7-to-1 with a sweep on the line. The Tigers piled up runs while starter Doug Fister stymied Cleveland's offense, which mustered only four hits over the course of the game.

The Tigers jumped out to an early 2-to-0 lead when Miguel Cabrera blasted a homer to deep right field in the first inning, but the Indians brought the score to 2-to-1 on a Michael Brantley double in the fourth inning. The score would stay there until the bottom of the seventh, when Detroit put up five runs, with big hits coming from Andy Dirks (triple), Prince Fielder (homer) and Jhonny Peralta (double).

Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez gave up four earned runs on six hits over 7.1 innings pitched while striking out three. Fister gave up four hits and one run in seven innings.

Cleveland is off on Thursday before visiting the Minnesota Twins for a weekend series.

After a brutal 1-15 record to close out the month of August, the Cleveland Indians have a chance to pull off a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night with another hard-fought victory.

Manny Acta's team picked up quality starts from pitchers Corey Kluber and Justin Masterson in the first two meetings to open the week, and will hope that right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez can put the finishing touches on the series with a dominant performance on Wednesday.

Although Jimenez has struggled lately and now sports a 5.46 ERA to go with 14 losses, the 28-year-old strikeout artist is 2-1 with a 3.75 ERA in four starts against the Tigers this season. He will hope to get the better of Detroit's 6'8" hurler Doug Fister in the series finale, as the two starters will both enter in search of their first victory since mid-August.

Cleveland Indians pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez (9-14, 5.61 ERA) has pitched much better against the Detroit Tigers than most other teams this season, and he'll get a chance to help Cleveland sweep the Tigers, who came into the series tied for the AL Central lead, at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday.

Jimenez is winless in his last four starts. He hasn't lasted more than 5.2 innings or given up fewer than 3 earned runs in any of those starts. However, he is 2-1 with a 3.75 ERA in four starts against the Tigers this season.

Doug Fister (7-8, 3.27 ERA) starts for the Tigers. Fister gave up 2 earned runs in five innings in his last outing, a Tigers win over the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 31, his first start since returning from a groin injury. He is 1-1 with a 2.38 ERA in three starts against the Indians this season.

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Justin Masterson led a strong performance on the mound as his team beat the Detroit Tigers, 3-2 for the second consecutive night at Comerica Park.

Masterson (11-12) scattered four hits in six innings with his one big mistake coming in the sixth inning when Detroit third baseman Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer to tighten up the game. Masterson was able to finish the sixth by striking out Prince Fielder but then he gave way to his bullpen to finish the game.

Scott Barnes, Joe Smith and Vinnie Pestano came on to hold the Tigers without another hit through the eighth inning before handing the ball to closer Chris Perez for a perfect ninth inning to earn his 34th save of the season.

The Indians were able to score on Detroit starter Rick Porcello (9-11) early with two runs in the second and one in the third as Michael Brantley and Asdrubal Cabrera both delivered run-scoring doubles.

The two teams will finish their three-game series on Wednesday night as the Indians continue trying to play the spoiler role in the AL Central race.

Despite being more than 20 games under .500, the Indians actually have a winning record against the Detroit Tigers this year.

They'll look to get No. 9 when the teams meet Tuesday night at Comerica Park for the second game of a three-game series.

Justin Masterson will be on the mound for Cleveland. He has struggled mightily over his last seven starts, allowing at least seven earned runs in four of them, including seven against the Tigers over four innings on Aug. 3. Detroit will start Rick Porcello.

The Indians have been free-falling in the standings, losers in 16 of their last 19, but getting a series win against the rival Tigers would be a good boost for morale.

The Cleveland Indians will call up four players on Tuesday to expand their active roster size to 33, as T.J. Zuppe of ESPN Cleveland writes. Infielder Cord Phelps, outfielder Vinny Rottino and pitchers David Huff and Scott Maine are being promoted to the big league roster.

Maine was recently claimed off waivers from the Chicago Cubs, while the other three players have spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Columbus.

Phelps, 25, has had another strong year in the minors, hitting .278/.368/.454 with 34 doubles and 16 homers in 577 plate appearances as the second baseman for Columbus. Rottino, 32, has split the year between the Indians' and Mets' Triple-A affiliates, hitting .297/.356/.454 with nine homers in 416 plate appearances.

A former first-round pick with 48 career MLB starts under his belt, Huff has spent the year in the Triple-A rotation, posting a 4.80 ERA with 81 strikeouts and 35 walks over 137 innings. Maine has a 4.79 ERA over 20.2 innings with the Cubs in 2012.

The Cleveland Indians defeated the Detroit Tigers on Monday, 3-2, in the series opener between the two teams. Asdrubal Cabrera was the star of the game for the Tribe, as he had two hits and drove in two runs.

With the two teams tied at one in the third inning, Cabrera singled to centerfield, scoring Shin-Soo Choo to give the Indians a lead. Then, with the score tied at two in the seventh inning, Cabrera came through again -- this time, with a sacrifice fly -- to give Cleveland a 3-2 lead that it would hold on to.

The Tigers threatened against Indians closer Vinnie Pestano in the ninth inning, as Prince Fielder led off with a double and Brennan Boesch reached via a hit-by-pitch two batters later. However, Pestano struck out Jhonny Peralta for the second out, and Jason Kipnis made a terrific play on an Alex Avila groundball to seal the victory.

Corey Kluber earned his first win of the season, as he held Detroit to two runs on six hits in six innings, while striking out four.

The two teams will be back at it again on Tuesday, with Justin Masterson (10-12, 4.91 ERA) taking the hill for the Tribe opposite Rick Porcello (9-10, 4.57 ERA) and the Tigers.
