Terry Francona is expected to interview for the Indians managerial position sometime this week.

Former Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona is a major candidate for the Cleveland Indians' managerial job, Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer is reporting. Francona is expected to interview for the vacated position this upcoming week. Interim manager Sandy Alomar is reportedly getting the first crack at the job that was formerly held by Manny Acta.

Francona, currently a color analyst for ESPN, managed the Red Sox from 2004-11, helping the franchise win two World Series crowns ('04 and '07). Francona was fired after a rocky 2011 season that featured an historic late-season collapse.

However, Francona admits the season off has helped rejuvenate him.

"Stepping back and getting away for a year really helped me," said Francona, who has managed 12 years in the big leagues and owns a 1,029-915 record. "I wouldn't be interviewing unless I was extremely excited."

If Francona wins the job, it would be the second time he's worked for the Indians organization. In 2000, Francona was fired as the Philadelphia Phillies manager and was hired by soon-to-be Cleveland general manager Mark Shapiro as a special assistant. Francon'a father, Tito, played for the Indians from '59-64.

"When I told my dad I was interviewing with the Cleveland Indians, he was probably the happiest man in the world," said Francona.

Cleveland Indians manager Manny Acta was fired by the team on Thursday after a disappointing season, but general manager Chris Antonetti received a vote of confidence from team president Mark Shapiro and was assured that his position is safe.

"We obviously look at a broad range of criteria when we're evaluating everybody. Chris is dealing with a set of challenges, which I understand, some of which are the creation of the organization that he and I ran together, and some of which are the result of other decisions. But I feel he's controlled the bulk of what he can control well. [Indians CEO Paul Dolan] and I still endorse strongly [Antonetti's] vision for how we can be competitive and, ultimately, a championship team."

The Indians are currently tied with the Minnesota Twins for the worst record in the American League (65-91).

Sandy Alomar is the Indians' top choice to replace Manny Acta, according to reports. The club is also considering Terry Francona.

Cleveland Indians bench coach and interim manager Sandy Alomar Jr. is the leading candidate to replace Manny Acta on a long-term basis, according to Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer, although general manager Chris Antonetti has not set a deadline for a decision. Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona is also being considered.

While Antonetti did not acknowledge whether or not Alomar is the top candidate in Thursday's press conference, he did say that the former catcher is in the running:

"Sandy is a prime candidate to take over but it's too early to speculate."

Alomar has spent the past three years in a coaching role with the Indians, after spending two years with the New York Mets. Alomar played for 20 seasons, posting a career .273/.309/.406 batting line.

Acta was informed on Thursday afternoon that he had been relieved of his duties as Indians manager, after Antonetti arrived at the decision the night before.

While Indians manager Manny Acta received the axe on Thursday, GM Chris Antonetti and team president Mark Shapiro were told that their jobs are safe for next season.

Cleveland Indians president Mark Shapiro and general manager Chris Antonetti will retain their jobs for next season, according to Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer. That news comes in the wake of the firing of manager Manny Acta, who will be replaced by bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr. for the remainder of the season.

Throughout the first half of the season, it appeared that Shapiro and Antonetti built a contender in the AL Central, as the Indians spent 40 days in first place and entered the All-Star break with a respectable 44-41 record. However, the second half has been a tailspin of mammoth proportions for the Tribe, as they've gone 21-50 while falling into a tie for last place.

Despite the poor finish this year, along with a similar poor second-half performance in 2011, Shapiro and Indians CEO Paul Dolan still believe in Antonetti's overall plan and vision for the organization, says MLB.com's Jordan Bastian.
